How to Make Starbucks Iced Shaken Espresso at Home? [A Quick and Easy Tips]

When Starbucks rebranded and adjusted the recipe for their Starbucks Doubleshot on Ice beverage in March 2021 and called it the Iced Shaken Espresso, it finally received the hype it deserved. The Iced Shaken Espresso gives you a proper caffeine boost while also being deliciously creamy, thanks to the added milk and simple syrup.

Did you know you can make an Iced Shaken Espresso yourself? Not only will you be able to save your hard-earned money, but you’ll also have a delicious summer drink by the end of it!

Ingredients

  • Espresso: It’s best if you have an espresso machine, but you can still make this drink with any other coffee you might have on hand. Because the original Iced Shaken Espresso has a stronger flavor, we recommend using dark roast coffee.
  • Simple syrup: You can either buy simple syrup or make it yourself! Simple syrup is made by gently boiling granulated sugar in water.
  • Milk: The original Starbucks recipe uses 2% milk, but you can use any other dairy substitute you prefer.
  • Ice: This is the most obvious ingredient, but make sure that your ice cubes can fit into the jar or shaker that you want to use to make the drink.

Equipment

  • Cocktail shaker: The best option for making this drink at home is to use a cocktail shaker. It’s already made to be used for shaken drinks, so this is our top recommendation.
  • Mason jar: If you don’t have a cocktail shaker, you can use a mason jar or another type of jar that can fit ice in it and has a lid that seals well. You don’t want it to spill as you’re shaking it!

How to make an Iced Shaken Espresso?

Now that you have everything you need, we’ll walk you through how to make this in your very own kitchen.

  1. Put ice in the shaker: The first step is to put your ice in the shaker or jar that you are making the drink with. If you’re making this with fresh espresso, it’s recommended to add extra ice because half of it will melt during the shaking process.
  2. Add simple syrup: If you have a syrup bottle with a pump, Starbucks uses about 4 pumps of syrup. Otherwise, try using a teaspoon of syrup.
  3. Add your espresso: The size of the drink you’re making will determine how much espresso to add. At Starbucks, they use 2 shots for a tall, 3 shots for a grande, and 4 shots for a venti. You can use less or more espresso, depending on your taste.
  4. Shake and pour: Secure the lid and shake the espresso with the ice for about 10 shakes. Then, Pour the iced espresso into your glass.
  5. Top with milk: Fill the rest of the glass with either 2% milk or your favorite dairy alternative.

That’s it! Only five steps are required to make the perfect iced espresso drink to help you cool off for the summer.

Extra tips

  • Try other syrups: Try this drink with other flavors! Some ideas include vanilla, hazelnut, or even brown sugar syrup.
  • Make ice out of coffee: To avoid the iced espresso becoming watered down, try making some ice cubes out of coffee. When they melt, it won’t water down the taste.
  • Add cold foam: Why stop at just milk? Try adding smooth cold foam on top. You can make it by shaking half and half cream in a mason jar, or you can use a handheld frother.
  • Toppings: Since you’re already making an iced espresso at home, why not go all out? You can add anything you want, including a caramel drizzle and a dash of cinnamon!
